A Message from Dean Marsha D. Rappley, MD

December 21, 2010

Dear College of Human Medicine Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni,

Transition in the Upper Peninsula

We would like to announce that David Luoma MD has stepped down from his role as CEO of the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation (UPHEC) and Community Assistant Dean of the College of Human Medicine effective December 17, 2010.

William Short MD, MSU College of Human Medicine Associate Professor in Family Medicine and current Residency Director at Marquette General Health System, has been appointed interim CEO of UPHEC and Community Assistant Dean for MSU College of Human Medicine. In addition, Jeffrey Dwyer PhD, MSU College of Human Medicine Associate Dean for Research & Community Engagement, will have an oversight role.  Patti Copley will continue in the invaluable role she plays as our Community Administrator.

Michigan State University College of Human Medicine looks forward to expanding our relationship with Marquette General Health System and collaborating on new research opportunities, medical education programs and the overall betterment of health care delivery in the Upper Peninsula.

We look forward to Dr. Luoma continuing his appointment as Professor of Family Medicine and thank him for his active involvement in the education of our medical students as Community Assistant Dean for more than 11 years.

MD Sparty

I am pleased to announce that, due to overwhelming demand, the College of Human Medicine online store with MD Sparty merchandise is live! These are the edgy skull and helmet logo. We have posters and T-shirts. Keep checking the website as they add merchandise. Proceeds from all sales benefit our student scholarship fund. We have already raised more than $7000 this year! You can easily access the site via the College of Human Medicine home page - click on "A Green Bill of Health." Just in time for the holidays!
