Dean's Updates

A Message from Dean Marsha D. Rappley, MD

November 4, 2011

I am sorry to inform you that Rafael de los Santos, M.D., died at home with his family, Tuesday, October 25. Dr. de los Santos was greatly loved and a deeply respected surgeon who joined our faculty early in the history of the college, in 1974. Many of our graduates, including me, had the privilege of being patients of Dr. de los Santos, and thousands more were influenced by the power of his teaching. In all the ways that he lived his life, Dr. de los Santos taught us dedication, compassion and excellence. We are better physicians and better people because of what Dr. de los Santos gave to us throughout his lifetime.   Dr. de los Santos Obituary

New Departments for the College

In their October meeting, the MSU Board of Trustees approved the recommendation for establishing three new departments for the College of Human Medicine. We are currently organizing the last of the procedures necessary to officially open our departments in Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology and Translational Science and Molecular Medicine. We now have Division Directors for each of these units and hope to embark on a search for chairs of these departments early in 2012. Congratulations to our Division Directors, Mike Brown, M.D., Rod Pease, M.D. and Jack Lipton, Ph.D., and to the many others whose persistence and excellence made this possible. These departments bring us new opportunities in research and education.

Understanding our public health mission and military medicine

We announced a few months ago that Dean Sienko, M.D., joins us as Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health. Dr. Sienko started November 1 and is meeting with many of our faculty and partners to understand the scope and breadth of all that we do in public health as a college. In addition to that, Dr. Sienko is a Major General in the U.S. Army Reserves, commanding the 3rd Medical Command headquartered in Fort Gillem, Georgia. Dr. Sienko is interested in working with students who are currently in the military or considering careers in military medicine. Please contact him if you are interested: dean.sienko@hc.msu.edu
