Dean's Update

A Message from Dean Marsha D. Rappley, MD

December 20, 2012

MSU and children's health care services

Many of you have expressed concern about the announcement issued yesterday (December 19) by Sparrow Health System and the University of Michigan.

Please know that our College and Michigan State University remains committed to providing and expanding pediatric specialty and subspecialty care here in the Lansing community.

We do not have any commitment to refer patients to a single health system and continue our current practice of seeking the best options for our patients, many of which we provide here in the greater Lansing region. For those special needs that are beyond what is offered in this region, we will continue to review options with families and determine what best meets their needs for their child.

Your colleagues, friends, and neighbors recognize the long-standing dedication of our faculty and staff to the wellbeing of the children and families of our own neighborhoods. We continue to strengthen this through providing more care directly to families, by training the pediatricians and primary care physicians for the region, state and nation, and through the tens of millions of dollars that the University invests each year in research focused on childhood disease and wellbeing. I take this opportunity to thank all of you who contribute to this work.

Marsha D. Rappley, M.D.

Dean, College of Human Medicine
