CHANGES IN LEADERSHIP
We are pleased to announce that Marc Basson, M.D., Ph.D., MBA, transitions to a new role as Director of the Program in Surgical and Biomedical Research, and that Ashraf Mansour, M.D., will assume the role of Interim Chair of the Department of Surgery. Thank you, Dr. Basson, for bringing the department from unranked in research to position 63 among U.S. medical schools. And thank you for now directing your efforts to leading research and new efforts in education related to developing research capacity.  Thank you also to Michael McLeod, M.D., for continuing as Associate Chair for Clinical Affairs and serving as point person in our clinical work with the MSU HealthTeam, Sparrow Health System, and all of our clinical partners. We look forward to the many opportunities the leadership of these three will bring to the department, college, and university over the next few years.

We are also pleased to announce that Eric Achtyes, M.D., M.S., has agreed to serve as Chair of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Psychiatry – West. Dr. Achtyes brings a strong background in clinical research, commitment to graduate medical education, and education of our medical students to this leadership role. Dr. Achtyes has been primary or co-investigator on more than 10 research programs supported by NIMH, NIAAA, and NIDA. Dr. Achtyes currently serves as President of the Michigan Psychiatric Society. We look forward to expanding this research and building on successful educational programs across West Michigan and beyond. Jed Magen, D.O., continues as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry – East. Thanks to both of these committed individuals for helping us to grow our research portfolio and educational footprint across the state, nation, and world.

We will begin an internal search for the Chair of the Department of Medicine. A search committee is forming, and we hope to make progress over the next few months. Thank you to Francesca Dwamena, M.D., for serving as Interim Chair and supporting the department over the past two years. Dr. Dwamena has brought vision and commitment to organizing the faculty effort in all of our missions. Dr. Dwamena brings our department to this point, at which we will have a successful and robust recruitment for chair.
