Said Omar, MD, is a professor, division chief of neonatology in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development, and the medical director of the regional neonatal intensive care unit (RNICU) at Sparrow Hospital. He has been faculty at MSU College of Human Medicine for 25 years. He joined MSU after completing pediatric residency and a neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at SUNY-Stony Brook in New York. He is board certified in pediatrics and in neonatal-perinatal medicine.

Dr. Omar has his own basic science laboratory where he studies stem cells and neonatal immunity in hyperoxia-induced lung injury. He has collaborated with multiple investigators at MSU, Sparrow Hospital and other institutions in and outside Michigan. He has published 31 scientific papers and serves on the editorial board of three referred journals and is a reviewer for multiple scientific journals.

As medical director of the Sparrow Hospital RNICU, Dr. Omar played an instrumental role in expanding the NICU and opening a new Special Care Nursery. Outcomes under his administrative role are in the best quartile in national VON benchmarks.

Dr. Omar’s colleagues describe him as “a superb teacher and mentor,” and “his scientific production has been prodigious.” “Dr. Omar is especially noted for his intelligence and compassion.
