Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University is one of the largest in the country, with more than 250 undergraduate majors, approximately 100 graduate students and postdoctoral research associates, and 40 faculty members.

Three areas of biochemical and molecular biological research are emphasized: genes and signaling, macromolecular structure and modeling, and plant biochemistry. Within these emphasis areas, we provide excellent research training in physical, computational, analytical biochemistry, intermediary metabolism, photosynthesis, enzyme characterization and kinetics, toxicology, immunochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels. In response to the ever-changing research environment, both collaboration and interdisciplinary research are encouraged.

Our graduates, who come from diverse cultural backgrounds, have professional careers in universities, industrial laboratories, government and research institutes; some pursue further academic training in medical schools. Seminars, colloquia, journal clubs, core courses and advanced topics courses round out an educational experience in a stimulating intellectual environment.
